RPP was appointed by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust to design a new £20 million, 80-bed acute mental hospital following a successful design competition and interview.
The practice is joined in the project by Richard Murphy Architects, Edinburgh; Devereux Architects London; renowned landscape architect, Andy Sturgeon; and AECOM for specialist engineering expertise.
From the outset, the client and team ethos has been to create a positive space for healing, where patients experience inclusion and normalisation.
Recognised as being core to the healing process, gardens feature in every aspect of hospital life. From first arrival, patients, staff and visitors experience the hospital as a journey between gardens rather than through dull corridors.
The design team has worked at every level to create a human-focused, normal and uplifting environment.
