The International Research Centre for Experimental Physics

The International Research Centre for Experimental Physics (IRCEP) is a project designed in partnership with international architectural practice, Sheppard Robson.

The client’s preferred option was to extend the existing “new” physics building (a robust 1950s steel frame building), which backs onto Botanic Gardens and is adjacent to the Lanyon Building.

This option involved slotting a new building into an existing courtyard. The solution was to create a 4-storey laboratory shed, separated from the existing building by the use of a slot atrium, allowing for a maximum retention of natural light to existing windows. A central circulation zone was created linking the new and existing spaces.

The Laboratory spaces are easy to maintain, adaptable to technological and scientific change and allow reasonable expansion. The environment also provides a sympathetic working atmosphere that stimulates creative thinking and promotes interaction.
