Dunnes Stores, Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow

218-224 Sauchiehall Street is a six-storey reinforced concrete building built in 1929. The original Art Deco façade was covered with a glazed curtain walling system in the 1960s and the building was sub-divided between several different tenants over many years.

RPP Architects worked with Dunnes Stores to restore the building to its original distinctive design. An atrium area at 4th and 5th floor level was reestablished and this, along with the use of colour and lighting, creates a strong focal point at the entrance of the new store.

Internally, all five floors were refurbished to provide approximately 30,000 square feet of space, connected by new escalators and lifts. New shopfronts, fascia and signage at street level create a very clean and modern image for Dunnes Stores, whilst the restoration of its Art Deco façade has reinstated the building as an iconic and distinguished stalwart of Sauchie Hall Street.
