Coney Island House, Downpatrick

With its widely appreciated rugged beauty, Coney Island offers a wonderful opportunity to site a contemporary retreat.

The design is ordered by the strength of the natural surroundings. At the entrance elevation, the mass is controlled through the grouping of simple, recognisable rural forms to create a sheltered courtyard. Fronting the beach, the building provides a barrier to the elements, punctuated most notably by a dramatic fully glazed bay maximising the view from the main living spaces.

Internally, the main living areas are predominantly double height to beach front, with the secondary spaces contained within the wings flanking the courtyard. The palette of materials used has been limited to high quality natural finishes with an emphasis placed on simple, robust, low maintenance detailing.
