The project involved the modernisation of Whiteabbey Hospital’s 1950s Theatre building to make it fit for purpose in today’s challenging surgical environment.
The Theatre Suite was stripped to a shell and entirely refitted to include ceilings, doors, ventilation, plumbing, electrical, sanitary ware, theatre lighting, finishes and all fixtures and fittings. The works involved an element of upgrade to the existing hospital infrastructure: gas systems, electrical switchgear, emergency back-up and IT/Telecoms.
RPP’s design considered Environmental Health Standards and relevant NHS codes for Facilities for Surgical Procedures and Fire codes. New air-conditioning and ventilation bring the theatres up to the standard required under HBN 26.
The works have greatly improved overall clinical facilities for patients, surgeons and staff, allowing greater control of the theatre environment for surgeons, better patient monitoring and patient dignity, as well as bringing infection control in line with current legislation.
